The most important thing to remember about setting weight loss goals is that they should be realistic. No one should expect to lose 50 pounds in a month or 10 pounds in a week. Even setting a goal of losing four pounds in a week may be unrealistic. If a person achieves this amount of weight loss on a regular basis, it would certainly be unhealthy. How much weight a person should lose may be determined by a doctor. Ideal weights, however, often force people to set a goal weight that is unrealistic. The body mass index is more appropriate,, but unless the dieter is immersed in water, this statistic is often unrealistic.

Another thing to remember when setting weight loss goals is to know whether it is a long term or a short term goal. Someone who wants to lose weight to fit into an outfit might be able to get away with using a fad diet. Someone who is more interested in a long-term weight management strategy should make lifestyle changes. Neither way is easier than the other. Both methods require the person to make changes. It is just that the latter requires the person losing weight to make changes over a much longer period of time than the former.
